Christmas?

I have such a hard time feeling festive these days.

I'm not feeling down, or pessimistic, or anything like that.

I enjoy seeing lights, and I did attend a Christmas party at the barn, and so on, but there's just none of the thrill it used to have for me.

I like getting presents, so that part is nice. Mostly my husband tries to get me something that is a surprise, often pet themed.

Our agreed upon gift this year is a cat exercise wheel. A couple of years he tried to make one, and he put so much work into it, and it was SO CLOSE to being perfect, but it was also heavy enough that the weight of the cats inside the wheel wasn't really enough to make it turn easily.

So, we're ordering a wheel, and it might be here in time for Christmas. I hope that the two younger cats will use it, as they often have lots of energy and get the zoomies half the night.

With my food needs being really....spartan, and vegetarian, the food part is not really festive anymore.

We try to make some different things, like tabboulah salad, wild rice, but none of that feels like Christmas food.

I do put up a tree. I haven't done it yet.

Usually Christmas Day is just my husband and I now, even though both of us have big families...who all live 15 hours driving away.

Yes, Christmas is still a time of gratitude for us, but it is not a time of family and friends and gatherings so much.

It's a lot like most of our other winter days together at home. Nothing wrong with that at all, but it feels pretty small.

We will likely see some people over the holidays, we talked about getting together with the woman in Edmonton (we looked after her pets) for a day. She's in the same situation as we are, and has almost no one to celebrate with. Also D from pottery expressed interest in getting together, so we can try that.

One of the couples that we do house work together with would like to spend an evening together.

I guess that's what we'll aim for.

In some ways, it's nice that Christmas isn't the enormous, massive, draining family event it used to be, with thirty or more people jammed into the house and so on, but maybe a happy medium?

What is Christmas like for you, now?
