Jan. 13th, 2024 08:08 pmToday I am grateful for:
Kind texts from other sisters that I don't talk to as often.
That my husband is home for the weekend, and helped me do chores.
The outdoor animals are doing okay, so far so good.
I'm feeling worried about the extreme cold, and we got an alert that there is concern over the power grid.
All we can do is fill the tubs with water so we have something to take out to the animals (water in the house would take quite a while to freeze, their water outside would freeze quickly) and to flush the toilet.
If things got bad, there is a good wood stove in our insulated garage, and we could take the animals out there. It would suck, but it would still be warm. We could melt snow for the equines outside.
If we had the wood stove in the basement, like we are planning, our outlook would be a lot more positive.
My Sweetie did do some work downstairs, and I did more mudding in the porch.
I might add to this later.

Date: 2024-01-14 08:14 am (UTC)We get these awful cold stretches every winter, often more than once. There is this tipping point below -30 C where things just get a whole lot more serious. It's sort of like, you have to be very careful to do everything for the animals, and there's less room for error in general.
For the most part, between the two of us, we can deal with these cold snaps, but there's always the worry about things that would upset the balance. Any kind of additional issue with an animal, a vehicle breaking down, or the power going out turns it into something much, much harder.
Thank you for your thoughts.
