Today I am grateful for:

That the animals are doing okay in this weather. It's only -22 C (though colder again later), which is A LOT easier than -40 C.

It's strange how after -40 C, and it's -20 something, you almost go "oh, how pleasant".

The ponies are for sure in a better mood. Their faces aren't completely frosted over with their frozen breath, for example.

I considered going to town for pottery, but the car wouldn't start even though it was plugged in. That means the battery is completely dead.

My husband was able to pick one up on his way home from work, and he installed it for me.

How our septic system works: We have one holding tank where everything goes, and most of the solids eventually settle to the bottom, and continuously break down. The grey water gets pumped out into a septic field, a grid of pipes buried under part of our yard, where it just seeps out and will eventually rejoin the water table.

In a year like this, where we've had very little snow and now a very cold stretch, the septic field can (and did!) freeze up, meaning that the grey water cannot go anywhere, and must be pumped out by a septic truck.

Some time in the last several very cold days, our septic field froze. The alarm for "full" (our grey water tank) went off early this morning. This means that the septic field might be frozen up for the rest of the winter, meaning every couple of weeks we will have to pay someone to come pump it out.

Yay!

So the septic guy can't come until Wednesday at the earliest, so we have to consider every flush, won't be bathing or doing laundry or putting any water down the drain if we can help it, because if the grey water tank is full and we just keep adding more water, it can overflow.

Doing chores was more pleasant today, since it wasn't as cold. I was able to spend a bit of time just sitting with Wonder and then the ponies.

I talked with Sister E for a while, she had more time, so we chatted mindlessly just because both of us are stuck inside with the weather and very bored.

My Sweetie came home after rock climbing and put the new battery in the car, and pretty much had to go straight to bed, so no real chance to connect with him at all tonight.

I learned about siglas poveiras, a system of writing used in Portugal among the residents of a single community (Póvoa de Varzim) that is believed to derive from Norse runes.

People here are complaining about -12˚ as though it's the end of the world; many are not dressed properly for cold weather. Even young Mungo has a warm coat and Canada Pooch boots - his feet were warm and dry when he came home from his dog park romp. His ears have remained as floppy as they were in early puppyhood, which means I can put him in a snood if he'll permit it.
