Jan. 17th, 2024 12:15 amToday I am grateful for:
The improvement in the temperatures. It was about -16 C today, which feels positively balmy after the week we've had.
Doing chores felt much less difficult.
I feel kind of gross today, because we still can't use any extra water until our septic tank is pumped out hopefully tomorrow. I would like to bathe, but I can't.
I went to see River today, and it was nice to actually go somewhere. I've been at home for almost an entire week, since there was no reason good enough to try to go anywhere when it was -35 C.
The car started easily with the new battery. I couldn't remember if that was the original battery from when we first bought the car; if so then we did well to have it last as long as it did since we bought that car almost ten years ago.
River looked well, and I was so happy to see him. I've missed him this week. I also missed the barn cats, especially old Earl, who just loves attention.
R was around, and we chatted. She was working with Quidley while River and I worked, and Quidley was a bit nutty from it warming up after such a cold spell.
River did well. Good ground work, he was in a good mood, and no need to repeat things.
I did ride him, and that went well too. He's still not great at making good circles at the trot, but he did some great halts from the canter.
As I was finishing up, another rider I knew was coming in for a lesson. We talked about Hollywood's passing, and she had to put down a beloved cat just before Christmas. I haven't seen her for a while, so I didn't know that. It was good talking with her. I think everyone at this barn is pretty much on the same page as far as their animals being very important to them.
I came home and my Sweetie was in the basement. He didn't do any physical work but was once again trying to sort out how the electrical circuits connect. To me it's very weird that the contractor must have done such an unconventional job down there that my husband can't figure out how it was done.
D from pottery was supposed to be going to a concert with us in the city this weekend, but her Dad is likely dying. He has a leaking aneurysm that cannot be repaired, so she's trying to be with him this week.
So, we watched some more of "The Expanse", and that's about it for today.
As a Canadian, I have long known about the colorful sashes worn by the Voyageurs. What I didn't know, is that they were used to hold their shirts closed because there was a boycott of British made buttons.

Date: 2024-01-17 08:10 am (UTC)The promise of a new faucet did not actualise. There are "a few parts needed" from Home Depot. There's that, and a new Shop Vac (says me), and a proper scrubbing brush (also says me)... and then life can move forward. I have procrastinated on painting door casings in the studio and the sulking room because the preparation (sanding and cleaning) is endless. I have the paint.
The water heater is on its last legs. Showers last 4-5 minutes before hot water grows tepid. It will be nice to get a new heater.

Date: 2024-01-17 10:37 pm (UTC)We've had to be judicious in our use of flushes for the toilet, haven't done any dishes, and no baths or showers. That's not the end of the world for a day or two, but after that, well. We could get away with basin baths that we toss outside, I guess.
Hopefully you can get what you need to continue with your painting, and can replace the water heater.

Date: 2024-01-18 08:07 am (UTC)Well, do you live close to a nice public pool or gym where you can shower when the time comes?

Date: 2024-01-18 08:10 am (UTC)At least I know that R who owns the riding barn will take good care of River. She checks on the horses often, brings them in during cold snaps to warm up and gives them extra mash, and in general does a good job of caring for ALL of the horses, not just her own.
At the previous barn, I couldn't trust the owner to put out enough hay, or to keep the water thawed out for them. She was awful.
