Today I am grateful for:

Weather so warm that the snow is melting a bit.

My Sweetie was able to get several things done today after work. He picked up cat and dog food, and signed the paper work for the new to us truck. He also exchanged some drawers at Ikea (we decided we could go with deeper ones after all).

I went to see River, and R was around a bit. River was very relaxed, which is nice, but a little hard to get him motivated to pick up his pace or his feet.

We tried a pattern at Liberty that has low jumps, and with a bit of work he'll likely do pretty well with that. He's willing to jump, just needs a more forward approach (he tries to step over them).

We did the other pattern that's all Liberty circles and he did well with that.

Our ridden work was good, nice circles and great halts from the canter.

When I went into the barn R was beginning a lesson with a new client (though her family already works with R).

I came home and we made supper, caught up with each other's day.

Then we watched "Red Notice" (we saw it already a while ago), which is a pretty fun movie.

Vietnam: I will be LIGHTLY going over the larger countries, as their history is very complex.

Vietnam has had human inhabitants for a very long time, that formed farming states first around the rich soils of the Red River Delta.

Most of what is now Vietnam was under the rule of the Chinese Han dynasty from 111 B.C to 939. Then it was a series of dynasties until it became a French colony in 1883 and soon became part of French Indochina.

Plantations produced crops of coffee, tea, indigo, and tobacco.

Vietnam became independent in 1945. It had been occupied by Japan during WWII, and was so stripped of food and resources that massive famines occurred, killing over 2 million people. After the Second World War France tried to take it over again, but failed.

Then, it became North Vietnam (communist) and South Vietnam (not communist). In 1975 the halves reunited as a Socialist nation.

"Vietnam is a developing country with a lower-middle-income economy. It has high levels of corruption, censorship, environmental issues and a poor human rights record; the country ranks among the lowest in international measurements of civil liberties, freedom of the press, and freedom of religion and ethnic minorities. It is part of international and intergovernmental institutions including the ASEAN, the APEC, the CPTPP, the Non-Aligned Movement, the OIF, and the WTO. It has assumed a seat on the United Nations Security Council twice."

The Vietnam war was more or less the conflict between North and South Vietnam, where the United States became involved in support of the non-communist South.

The involvement of the U.S. began after the end of WWII, mainly because of the conflict with Japan, and their occupation of Vietnam, and the U.S. ensuring that Japan was going to stay out of Vietnam.

That involvement went on for over 20 years, and was driven by the fear of the spread of communism in the globe, was part of the efforts worldwide to fight communism's spread.

To this day, millions of people are still suffering the effects of the Agent Orange sprayed over the region by the U.S., with high rates of birth defects and other health problems. The U.S. is continuing to clean up former storage sites of the chemical and land affected, as well as aid to people directly affected.

Arsenic in the rivers (I think naturally occurring) is an ongoing problem, as well as un-exploded ordinances left from the wars.

Vietnam is working to improve it's economy. It is trying to diversify from traditionally exporting agricultural products. It does produce and export products like cashews, rice, and black pepper, as well as shellfish produced in fisheries. It is developing its Science and Technology sectors, as well as tourism. It is producing oil and gas in large quantities.

Apparently religion is not a big thing there, likely because Communism/Socialism isn't big on religion as it competes with the government in terms of values.

"Under Article 70 of the 1992 Constitution of Vietnam, all citizens enjoy freedom of belief and religion.[415] All religions are equal before the law and each place of worship is protected under Vietnamese state law. Religious beliefs cannot be misused to undermine state law and policies.[415][416] According to a 2007 survey 81% of Vietnamese people did not believe in a god.[417]"

A very interesting video about the war from the perspective of a U.S. veteran.
