Mar. 10th, 2024 12:06 amToday I am grateful for:
Beautiful weather today.
We went to the city today, just for enjoyment. On the way there, we took our giant stock pile of recycling (we took the truck today).
Then we went to the fabric recycling place, and I had gathered a box of stuff (some usable clothes, as they have a thrift store area, some fabric scraps and crap to be recycled). I found one shirt that I liked.
Then we went to an art supply store, and I got some watercolor paper, as well as some starch and paper that you apparently can use the starch to turn the paper into something more durable similar to paper that can be sewn. Kind of a fun idea.
Then we went to Winner's, and I found some perfume, and a pair of jeans that hopefully won't make me hate myself.
We grabbed a burrito in the city, and then came home.
We watched an older movie called "Dead Again", and it was okay, but not fantastic.
The guy who refinished those chairs says he can be ready to come to our place tomorrow to talk about the window frames. It's good that he's ready for tomorrow, since my husband will be at home to talk about how it needs to be done.
Then, I need to be ready to talk with him about when he can come and work, since I have such crazy night owl tendencies.
I hope it all works out to our mutual benefit. I'm always worried about having someone come work in our home, and how hard it might be to get enough sleep, and if the work is good and pay expectations etc.
Anyhow, not a bad day. Nice to get the recycling taken care of, and to move some clothes and fabric along out of the house.
North Macedonia is a land locked country. It's just under ten thousand square miles, with about 1.8 million people.
Though it is right above Greek, and the two countries were once a single country of Macedonia, the people of North Macedonians are mainly known as Macedonian, not Greek. There are many other nationalities here, Turks, Serbians, and so on. Mainly Christian.
This area has been ruled by just about every empire, from Persia, Alexander the Great's father Philip absorbed most of it into Macedonia (it had a different name before that) Alexander the Great conquered the rest, then it was the Ottomans, and back and forth between neighboring countries. It was controlled by Bulgaria during WW I, then part of the Serbian Kingdom, then back to Bulgaria for the Second World War, to Yugoslavia in 1945. It peacefully seceded from Yugoslavia in 1991.
"Since 2005, it has also been a candidate for joining the European Union. North Macedonia is an upper-middle-income country according to the World Bank's definitions[8] and has undergone considerable economic reform since its independence in developing an open economy. It is a developing country, ranked 82nd on the Human Development Index; and provides social security, a universal health care system, and free primary and secondary education to its citizens."
Into modern times, there have been internal conflicts between Albanians living in North Macedonia, and the people who view themselves as being Macedonian.
The country has two mountain ranges at the borders, and a big river valley all down the middle between them with the Vardar River running through it. The mountainous areas are cooler, and the valley is consistent with Mediterranean climate.
It is a democratic country at the moment, with a Parliamentary system. There is a president, but most of the power is held by a Prime Minister.
There was a dispute with Greece over whether or not this country could use "Macedonia" or not, when it became independent from Yugoslavia. Greece felt that THEY were Macedonians (and that the people of this other region were Slavic), and didn't want them to use that name for themselves. For a while, it was the "Former Yugoslav Republic of North Macedonia", and it's taken YEARS of negotiation to come to terms with Greece over the use of "Macedonia" in their name.
Though Wikipedia oddly doesn't elaborate much on the economy, it sounds like it's mainly from oil and tourism. Little discussion of agriculture.
Mother Theresa was born in Skopje, North Macedonia.

Date: 2024-03-11 06:28 am (UTC)Starts out with a lot of rose, but not super strong on me after an hour.
Jean trends annoy me, as it seems like as soon as I found several pair of the slim leg jeans that fit nicely, it seems to be an outdated look. I'm not sure I love the very tight legs anyhow, I'm more of a straight or flare leg person, but it's always a shifting trend.
I'm not a super trendy person, but I like to not look VERY out of style. I worry more about whether or not a trend looks good on me.
What really didn't work on me was lower rise jeans, as they just slid off of my body. I don't like the "mom" jeans either, more of a mid rise.
So, my preference is a mid rise straight jean, and that's what these are. Hopefully we both live long and prosper.

Date: 2024-03-11 08:16 am (UTC)I don't know that I really work that hard. I'm not doing that much on the house most of the time, other than the mental work lately of trying to find people to help and to organize things like trips to buy cupboards. The hard work seems to be in bursts, like I might not do much of anything on the house for weeks, then I might work fairly steadily for a while on something like painting a couple of rooms or something that doesn't take long like helping my husband move a bunch of drywall into the basement.
Most of the work I do is work that I choose to do, like caring for the animals and working with River.
SOMETIMES I do work hard. Like last summer doing all the work on landscaping, and digging that giant hole to make an area for shrubs. That was hard work.
I don't think I work hard compared to most people who go to work every day, and have to look after kids, or people like R who owns the riding barn. She runs a dog grooming business and does that for 8 hours a day, and she still does a couple of lessons every day, AND works horses, and also does all the normal stuff that everyone does like laundry and mowing and gardening. She never sits still.
I spent a fair amount of my life being fairly poor, and I really struggled as a young adult. I worked mostly at cleaning jobs, or working at a grocery store, and had to walk everywhere. Being able to live better these days is much appreciated.

Date: 2024-04-03 09:53 pm (UTC)Some debt is inevitable such as buying a house, but we try not to carry debt in terms of our bills or day to day spending. If we want to buy something a big pricey that isn't "necessary" we talk about whether or not we need it or can afford it.
Sometimes I sell a few things to buy something else I want, or offset the cost a bit.
I totally get it for some people who can't help but carry debt because of unforeseen emergency like a hot water tank or car bill or something like that. It's harder to understand people who replace all of their living room furniture or go on a fancy vacation when they don't really have the money.
