Today I am grateful for:

More gorgeous weather. Very early for it to be this nice.

There are geese returning.

Hans bit my pinky finger when I first awoke, because he likes to bite my phone when I hold it, or my glasses as I try to put them on (he often knocks them out of my hand) and pretty much anything I try to hold when I am first awakening. I think he's excited because I usually feed them when I get up. It was an accident, but Hans plays hard sometimes.

It was enough to hurt and draw blood, but it seems (as I write this at night) that it isn't getting infected. Hopefully if I keep it clean and bandaged with Polysporin on it, it will be okay.

I was able to pick up more food for Jones at the vet clinic, good to be ahead on that. I also made an appointment for next week to look at Roxy's leg again.

I went to pottery, and was able to buy some Raku clay (you need another person to initial your purchase to keep us all honest).

I attempted to throw using the Raku clay, but didn't get good results. I did trim some other pieces that I threw last week.

I was able to get groceries in decent time, which is nice. I felt oddly disoriented, though, and found myself crossing back and forth all over because I forgot to pick up vitamins, so I had to go all the way back, and so forth. Not my usual organized path through the store.

There is a couple who seems to shop the same time I do, and I have seen them now the last four times I have gone shopping. I think they are aware of me too, and it's interesting how paths intersect like this.

I came home and my Sweetie stayed up just long enough to help me put things away.

From the 1400's to 1800's, Moldova was a vassal state in the Ottoman Empire, then it was ceded to Russia and became known as Bessarabia.

Then it joined with Wallachia to form Romania, but very quickly the whole area was retaken by Russia.

In 1917, the region briefly became an autonomous state within Russia, and then blah blah, blah. Became part of this, then part of that, then back to this again. Every other country around it tried to assimilate it, and something happened, etc.

After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, it became again it's own nation, named Moldova, though there are always people laying claims and picking away at bits of it. For now, it is Democratic.

"Moldova is the second poorest country in Europe by GDP per official capita after Ukraine and much of its GDP is dominated by the service sector.[23] It has one of the lowest Human Development Indexes in Europe, ranking 76th in the world (2022).[12] Moldova ranks 60th in the world on the Global Innovation Index as of 2023.[24] Moldova is a member state of the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the World Trade Organization, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the GUAM Organization for Democracy and Economic Development, the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation, and the Association Trio."

In general, things are rough. The political parties aren't getting along, the economy isn't very strong, there are protests, and so on.

There is a lot going on because of the war between Russia and Ukraine. The leader of Moldova did not support Russia, saying that the invasion of Ukraine was an illegal action.

Well, Moldova needed Russia for fossil fuels, so there was a scramble to find other resources. Also, there have been pro-Russian sympathizers who are working within the country to destabilize it.

The country is taking in lots of Ukrainian refugees, and seeks to join the European Union.

This little country has a lot to lose, if Ukraine is taken over by Russia.

It is not great in the Human Rights area, which is partly what's holding back the joining the EU.

Geography: Moldova just barely doesn't reach the Black Sea, which is too bad because that would have made a big difference to them. They do have access with rivers, though.

"Although the country is technically landlocked, the port of Giurgiulești in the extreme south-west of the country lies on the confluence of the Danube and Prut rivers, which therefore provides it with access to international waters through the Danube which empties into the Black Sea. The Dniester river, which rises in Ukraine near the city of Drohobych, passes through Moldova, separating the main territory from its unrecognised breakaway region Transnistria, and empties into the Black Sea in Ukraine. At its closest point, Moldova is separated from the Dniester Liman, an estuary of the Black Sea, by only 3 km of Ukrainian territory."

It has a pretty moderate climate with kinda cold winters, and nice summers. It is mostly hilly and forested.

It has a pretty cool animal, the Saiga antelope, and recently reintroduced the European Wood Bison.

It has a good climate for making wine, and grows a good variety of grains and fruits and vegetables.

It is home to the world's largest wine cellar. No joke, this is nuts, it is all underground with 200km of paths/roads, and in some places you have to drive to get around. NUTS.

A good video about the history:

Moldova apparently does some good work in Eurovision, but probably all of you remember this song, that became partly famous in the "Numa Numa" video.

The original song is Moldovan, and the title is "Dragosta Din Tei".

Aha, I remember Lois talking about the Saiga antelope but I don't remember why. It may have been the one in a framed print I have in the sulking room.

The weather here is cold with light, blustery snow that clings to the trees. Heavenly. I'm glad it's too soon to put boots into storage. Last week, I saw people wearing tank tops and flip-flops in their premature, show-offy leap into summer climes.

I would be happy to have winter until the middle of May. Then, I'll grow a bunch of things until autumn.
