Mar. 21st, 2024 12:37 amToday I am grateful for:
Okay weather. About -4 C. A bit of snow, but nothing even inconvenient.
I got good sleep last night.
I texted with the handy man, who said he could work Saturday, IF we are ready. My husband doesn't seem to think we could be ready for that, but I think we could be. He already bought the lumber, and we're very close to being ready in the porch. Maybe it's not so bad to have some kind of deadline, though we don't HAVE to be ready for Saturday, but why not try?
I spoke with Sister E for a good, long conversation. The place where her horse lives, the property owner (a friend of E's) broke her ankle badly, so my sister is looking in on the horses. The woman's husband is feeding them, but is not a "horse person" and wouldn't necessarily notice other concerns.
I went to the riding barn, and I think R is mentally stuck on talking to everyone about their 'energy'. It sounded like she was talking to the person just before me about energy, she mentioned talking to the girl who works with River sometimes and HER energy, and so...we spent the ENTIRE lesson talking about energy.
I kind of tried to go back to doing actual work with the horse a couple of times, but no success.
While I totally understand the importance of being positive in our work, and how we can use our core in Liberty, and how staying "up" helps the horse stay connected, I really didn't need an entire class on this.
Yes, we talked about how there are things that become like old food (resentments, things that are stagnant and not improving) that you just shove to the back of the fridge because you can't be bothered to actually deal with it, and what it does is make it impossible to make room for new food, and it brings you down every time you open the fridge door.
This for me, is often how I feel about all the things in the house that aren't finished, my piles of stuff everywhere, and in the case of River and I, it is the things that we work on that don't improve.
So, of course we discuss how to approach our "stuckness" with creative solutions and playfulness.
Okay, therapy session done, everything will be solved by thinking of a gentle orange glow and breathing through frustration.
I guess it's worth a try, as beatings aren't a thing anymore.
I came home and hopped in the tub, and my Sweetie came home and did a tiny bit more work on the mudding in the porch, and hopefully I can prime that room tomorrow (?).
I'm really not sure where to start with Poland, as it is a pretty big, politically important place, and I wasn't sure if I was going to dig into the "bigger" countries, as I mainly wanted to do all the little tiny places that I know so little about.
Let's just say IT'S BEEN INVADED. A LOT.
Politically, I'm just going to start with WWI. Poland was not an entity as such, as it was divided up between Germany, Russia, and Austro-Hungaria. That said, it was thus smack in the middle of all the fighting.
The Russian part was opposed to both the German and Austro-Hungarian parts.
Poland was trying to establish itself as an independent nation, and drove out the Russians and the Germans and Austro-Hungary later collapsed. As the armies retreated, they destroyed everything in their path, leaving mostly wreckage for the people of Poland.
"The country...had undergone four or five occupations by different armies, each of which had combed the land for supplies. Most of the villages had been burnt down by the Russians and their retreat (of 1915); land had been uncultivated for four years and had been cleared of cattle, grain, horses and agricultural machinery by both Germans and Bolsheviks. The population here was living upon roots, grass, acorns and heather. The only bread obtainable was composed of those ingredients, with perhaps about 5 per cent of rye flour..."
In 1917, The United States entered the war and drove back the Russians, and as Russia failed to win anything of importance afterwards, ceded the formerly occupied lands back to Poland.
Then in 19818, both the Habsburgs (Austro-Hungary) and Germany fell, and more land was restored to Poland.
in 1918, the country of Poland (after 123 years of being occupied/annexed) was restored.
WWII though, Poland was occupied by Germany (and Russia occupied some too), and was where many of the concentration camps were built, including Auschwitz.
Six million Polish people (roughly half were Jewish) were killed by the Germans, and about 90% of those people were civilians.
After WWII, some land was restored, other land not restored, and borders shifted somewhat Eastward.
Post war, Stalin still claimed that Poland was under his jurisdiction, and established a Socialist Hegemony over it.
Through lots of civil unrest, and what seems to have been the activities of worker's unions (?), Poland gradually crawled out from underneath Russia in the 1990's.
Of course Poland is now shitting bricks over Russia deciding to attack the Ukraine, and has taken in many Ukrainian refugees. It's also beefing up it's military.
Geography: has coastline along the Baltic sea, which doesn't look REAL warm, but nice. I have to say, I wouldn't feel self-conscious on this beach. My somewhat pasty, flabby, middle aged body would be right at home here.

Poland is mainly flat, open farmland, (makes it easy for those armies to keep rolling over it) with mountains to the South.
It has some weird things in it, like the forest of bent trees https://youtu.be/HmWVoFR_YXg?si=Ss7Yzmty99Xvj4ab
