Today I am grateful for:

Warm weather again today.

I was able to take Dandy over to be with Wonder for a while again today, and they were interacting nicely. I'm glad this seems to be working, as I really didn't want to have to find another companion for Wonder at this time. After all, we already HAVE ponies.

I did some more laundry, and when I was outside with the animals I took away a few wheelbarrows of pony poop.

Then I went to see River, and we had a lesson today.

R and I talked about the Love of Liberty show from Sunday, and what I thought was well done, and any thoughts about it. I had some thoughts about how the seating was arranged, and how that could be different, things like that.

We worked outside today, and worked on the barrel pattern, as well as some very simple things to help me build some confidence with River with just the neck rope outside.

I came home and my Sweetie showed up pretty much the same time. We made supper and watched some "Boardwalk Empire".

A fairly simple day, but that's fine.

Libya also has coastline on the Mediterranean Sea, and is considered "Arabian", though it is in North Africa.

The ancient people of Libya were Berbers, then the Phoenicians (Semitic) began trading in North Africa, and the Punic culture formed. Then there was influence from Greece, then Persian rule, then Alexander the Great conquered the region, then the Ptolemaic Kingdom. Then there was more back and forth, and it was Islamic for a long time.

Then it was controlled (not sure about how it was ruled, or what) by the Ottoman Empire.

"After the Italo-Turkish War (1911–1912), Italy simultaneously turned the three regions into colonies.[51] From 1912 to 1927, the territory of Libya was known as Italian North Africa. From 1927 to 1934, the territory was split into two colonies, Italian Cyrenaica and Italian Tripolitania, run by Italian governors. Some 150,000 Italians settled in Libya, constituting roughly 20% of the total population.[52]

The so-called "pacification of Libya" by the Italians resulted in mass deaths of the indigenous people in Cyrenaica, killing approximately one quarter of Cyrenaica's population of 225,000.[54] Ilan Pappé estimates that between 1928 and 1932 the Italian military "killed half the Bedouin population (directly or through disease and starvation in Italian concentration camps in Libya)."[55]"

After WWII, the Allies defeated Italy (lots of fighting in Libya during the North African Campaign) and the Allies continued to occupy Libya until 1951. By December 24, 1951, Libya declared its independence as the United Kingdom of Libya, a constitutional and hereditary monarchy under King Idris.

Oil was discovered, which helped the economy enormously, but also concentrated wealth in the elite, and made King Idris very wealthy, but not the average citizen.

This set the stage for revolution: "On 1 September 1969, a group of rebel military officers led by Muammar Gaddafi launched a coup d'état against King Idris, which became known as the Al Fateh Revolution.[60] Gaddafi was referred to as the "Brother Leader and Guide of the Revolution" in government statements and the official Libyan press."

He's a very controversial figure, as yes, he was socialist and so on, but also committed a lot of crimes against humanity and who knows if he actually cared about people. He did some good things like helped out women in terms of freedoms and social equality, creating laws requiring a woman to be over the age of 16, and requiring a woman's consent in marriage.

Under his rule, the Human Development Index rose greatly, he built a freshwater river system to bring water to regions that lacked, brought in free health care and electricity, and so on.

His government also bombed a commercial flight at Lockerbie in 1988 killed 270 people.

He died in 2011, caught in the crossfire of the Arab Spring.

Interesting to note: "Libya was a pioneer state in North Africa in species protection, with the creation in 1975 of the El Kouf protected area. The fall of Muammar Gaddafi's regime favoured intense poaching: "Before the fall of Gaddafi even hunting rifles were forbidden. But since 2011, poaching has been carried out with weapons of war and sophisticated vehicles in which one can find up to 200 gazelle heads killed by militiamen who hunt to pass the time. We are also witnessing the emergence of hunters with no connection to the tribes that traditionally practice hunting. They shoot everything they find, even during the breeding season. More than 500,000 birds are killed in this way each year, when protected areas have been seized by tribal chiefs who have appropriated them. The animals that used to live there have all disappeared, hunted when they are edible or released when they are not," explains zoologist Khaled Ettaieb.[149]"

So, there just continue to be a lot of conflicts and civil war. The government is hazy right now: "The control over the country is currently split between the House of Representatives (HoR) in Tobruk and the Government of National Unity (GNU) in Tripoli and their respective supporters, as well as various jihadist groups and tribal elements controlling different parts of the country".

Libya has a lot of coastline on the Mediterranean Sea, and near the coast the climate is a little nicer, but everything else is pretty much just hot, baking, barren desert.

There are some large massifs (mountain masses), areas of ancient volcanic activity, some desert oasis areas, and in many places survival is possible where they can dig for ground water. There are many ancient cities and sites that are very well preserved.

The economy is largely from oil, as most other sectors are not developing with all the conflict and lack of leadership. Most of the food is imported, there is a lot of unemployment, not enough water, not enough food or basic amenities for the poor, most employment opportunities are only in working for the government, not skilled labor or manufacturing or agriculture. There is a lot of damaged infrastructure, etc.
