May. 27th, 2024 11:37 pmToday I am grateful for:
Beautiful sunny weather.
I put everyone out into their pastures again while I put an hour or so in the garden pulling weeds. You'd never believe how bad the dandelions and grass are.
At least we've really improved the soil to the point where we aren't getting too much for Canada Thistle in there any more. They don't come up in well fertilized soil as much.
I am really pleased with how well Dandy has done with allowing himself to be caught. He's come a long way from the terrified pony who would just run and run and run rather than allow himself to be caught.
I went to town mainly for pottery, but also picked up some of Jones's special food and some dewormer for the horse/ponies.
I went to pottery mainly to pick up the raku pieces that have been bisqued, as I will need to take it to the location where we are doing the actual glazing when we have our event on June 1. It's at another craft center member's property.
I have a couple of raku pieces that are not bisqued yet, and they may not be dry enough to get into the last firing before the event, but that's okay. If they aren't ready, I can still glaze them next year.
Then I went to Winner's for fun, and while all I got was an eyeshadow (very sparkly and pretty light purple/pink), I tried on this VERY cool dress. It was a more or less just a shortish plain dress shape with spaghetti straps, but it was white sequins with some fabric flowers and other floral sequin pattern along the bottom. It even fit me! I was very tempted to get it, as I pretty much have never seen anything like that before, but I really don't know where I would ever wear it. It was very interesting, but would be a fairly dramatic dress to wear to anything other than maybe a fancy evening garden party, which I am not in the habit of attending.
Oh well. It was still a fun find to try on.
Then I got groceries, for which I am very grateful to be able to do so.
It was nice to be done everything fairly early, compared to how late it can be if I do some work at the pottery studio, since I didn't do any throwing or anything today.
My Sweetie was pulling weeds in the garden when I got home, then we ate and watched some "Boardwalk Empire".
Sudan is in Northeast Africa, and has coastline on the Red Sea. It was the largest country in Africa when it was joined with what is now South Sudan. The Nile River forms part of it's border.
It has about 45 million people, mostly Sunni Islam.
Historically was part of several great empires, and was at one time part of the Egyptian Empire between roughly 1500 BC and 1 BCE, The the Kush Empire, then the Nubians created three Christian countries. Between the 14th and 15th century, the region was settled by Arab people, and some other guys for a while, then Egyptian again (and lots of slave trading in the 1800s) then it became a British possession while still being governed by Egypt.
The Egyptian Revolution of 1952 overthrew the monarchy and drove out the British, and from there Sudan gained independence in 1956.
Then it was Islamic rule, military rule, lots of civil war and genocide, and pretty awful overall. Today it is a secular state (since 2020) and there is still just endless fighting with no clear end in sight.
This has left the economy in tatters, since there is no stability and no investment in the development of industry or markets or infrastructure. It is considered a "least developed country" and it's not great there. Human rights issues are rampant, people have little food security, and people are often forced from their homes from the fighting.
As I mentioned, the Nile River is a big feature, and the city of Khartoum is where the White and Blue Nile rivers merge to become "The Nile". The Nile River flows NORTHWARDS and ends in the Mediterranean. The Blue Nile begins in Ethiopia, and the White Nile begins in the Great Lakes region of Africa.
The South is wetter than the North, which is desert.
There are mineral resources there, and agriculture (they produce a lot of sesame seeds Gum Arabic, a tree resin which is very useful in making things like watercolor paint and ink, cosmetics, and other industrial applications, and sandalwood), and some oil (though when South Sudan seceded in 2011, most of the oilfields were in that region).

This video mentions that Sudan has more pyramids than Egypt, which is interesting.

Date: 2024-05-31 08:36 am (UTC)It IS a pretty dress, and I wouldn't be opposed to getting it just for sheer fun, but it's almost in "prom dress" level for "where would I wear this?".
It's cute to the point of being silly.
It was still fun to find and try on.
