Today I am grateful for:

Getting some more weeds pulled.

I did a small introduction of the round pen to Dandy, and I am very pleased that he figured out very quickly that I was not driving him to run around the outside, and soon he came in to me of his own volition. The sooner he figures out that I am not a predator in there the better.

A short burst of rain.

I went to see River for our lesson, and it hadn't rained at the barn, so the outdoor arena was dry enough to work there today.

We worked on some patterns that will be in the show in June.

River did pretty well over all.

I came home and my Sweetie had started supper, so I did the dishes, and we watched some "Boardwalk Empire".

Eritrea is a smallish country in Africa, with a great deal of coastline on the Red Sea.

Human remains found there have dated to about 1 million years ago, so it has been inhabited for a very long time.

For most of it's history, Eritrea has been part of one empire or another, and has mostly been part of what is now Ethiopia. It had Christian influence since as far back as the fourth century. When it became part of the Ottoman Empire it was introduced to Sunni Islam.

"In the 16th century, the Ottomans conquered the Eritrean coastline, then on May 1865 much of the costal lowlands came under the rule of the Khedivate of Egypt, until it was transferred to the Italians on February 1885. Beginning in 1885–1890, Italian troops systematically spread out from Massawa toward the highlands, eventually resulting in the formation of the colony of Italian Eritrea in 1889. After World War II, Eritrea was administered by the British Military Administration until 1952."

Self-government wasn't smooth, Eritrea became part of Ethiopia again for a while, and did not really become independent until 1993.

"Eritrea is one of the least developed countries. It is a unitary one-party presidential republic in which national legislative and presidential elections have never been held.[29][6] Isaias Afwerki has served as president since its official independence in 1993. According to Human Rights Watch, the Eritrean government's human rights record is among the worst in the world.[30] The Eritrean government has dismissed these allegations as politically motivated.[31] Freedom of the press in Eritrea is extremely limited; the Press Freedom Index consistently ranks it as one of the least free countries. As of 2022 Reporters Without Borders considers the country to be among those with the least press freedom.[32] Eritrea is a member of the African Union, the United Nations, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, and is an observer state in the Arab League alongside Brazil and Venezuela.[33]"

So, Eritrea fought with Italy in the world wars.

Eritrea is hot and dry along the coast, rapidly becoming mountainous in the middle, as it sits right on top of a rift zone (so there is volcanic activity and earthquakes), then becomes grassy with some forest.

"n 2006, Eritrea announced that it would become the first country in the world to turn its entire coast into an environmentally protected zone. The 1,347 km (837 mi) coastline, along with another 1,946 km (1,209 mi) of coast around its more than 350 islands, will come under governmental protection."

There is a lot of variability in the weather as far as rainfall and temperatures.

Mining and agriculture make up most of the economy, with agriculture occupying about 70% of the population.

There is some tourism, though it seems to be mostly made up of the Eritrean diaspora (people of Eritrean descent who now live elsewhere, but probably come back to visit family).
