Today I am grateful for:

Gorgeous weather.

A relaxed start to the day.

A phone conversation with Trainwreck that wasn't psychotic. How nice for a change.

I planted some more in the garden, and it's about 95% done now. I'm going to plant some more beans, and later some tomato plants, but that's about it.

The garden starting is always exhausting.

I worked with Dandy for a little while in the round pen, and after a bit of running around, I got nice draw again.

My Sweetie came home, and we wasted no time in getting things ready to go for a bike ride at the park down the road.

It was a good ride, and this time my rear brakes worked (I haven't ridden it since he took it in for the second time to get them fixed, and this time it seems good). We went on the "fire access road" again, and around the campgrounds.

Such a beautiful summery day.

Cameroon is a country in central Africa "Its coastline lies on the Bight of Biafra, part of the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean. Due to its strategic position at the crossroads between West Africa and Central Africa, it has been categorized as being in both camps. Its nearly 27 million people speak 250 native languages, in addition to the national tongues of English and French, or both.[11][12][13]"

In antiquity, the area was inhabited by the Sao culture, and the Baka hunter/gatherers. The Portuguese arrived in the 15th century for trade. " Fulani soldiers founded the Adamawa Emirate in the north in the 19th century, and various ethnic groups of the west and northwest established powerful chiefdoms and fondoms."

Then this area was colonized by Germany in 1884, and was named Kamerun. After WW I it was divided between France and the United Kingdom. After a lot of strife, the French part gained independence in 1960, but the United Kingdom part did not gain independence until 1961, and the two parts federated.

There is internal conflict because part of the population is more "Anglophone". "It has experienced tensions from the English-speaking territories, where politicians have advocated for greater decentralisation and even complete separation or independence (as in the Southern Cameroons National Council). In 2017, tensions over the creation of an Ambazonian state in the English-speaking territories escalated into open warfare."

In short, the more Anglophone states want to be separate.

The nation is stumbling towards Democracy. It does have an elected president, but until recently there has only been one party. There are attempts being made to root out corruption and so on.

President Biya has more or less ruled Cameroon first as Prime Minister, then as President, from 1975 to present, which is not a good sign, really.

"Biya and his party have maintained control of the presidency and the National Assembly in national elections, which rivals contend were unfair.[36] Human rights organisations allege that the government suppresses the freedoms of opposition groups by preventing demonstrations, disrupting meetings, and arresting opposition leaders and journalists.[64][65] In particular, English-speaking people are discriminated against; protests often escalate into violent clashes and killings.[66] In 2017, President Biya shut down the Internet in the English-speaking region for 94 days, at the cost of hampering five million people, including Silicon Mountain startups.[67]"

Cameroon is almost like a miniature Africa, in that is has pretty much every kind of ecosystem from coastal, to desert, rain forest to savannah, and mountains too.

There is some good farmland, and about 70% of the population is engaged in subsistence farming.

There is commercial production of bananas, sugar tobacco, and coffee is a big cash crop.

Bush meat is a staple of many people there, so of course that's a huge issue.

There is some manufacturing, a bit of fossil fuel, and mineral resources that are largely undeveloped.

There's a trio of friends who are currently driving from London to Cape Town in a bespoke car named Edna. You can find their voyage and their progress (they just left Cameroon) on Instagram.
