Jul. 23rd, 2024 12:47 amToday I am grateful for:
Just being able to stay inside again, though it was hot and muggy in our house, too.
The heat is really getting to me. I can't really DO anything in this heat. I wouldn't mind going to the park down the road, but it's SO HOT.
All I do is try not to move until fairly late in the day when it starts to cool off.
That said, the farrier needed to come in the morning before it got too hot, so she came here at the "end" of her day, 9am. She says she's been starting at about 6 am.
Everyone behaved well, and it was done fairly quickly with little drama, which is how we like it.
Then I came back into the house and slept a lot. While sweating.
I had a decent phone call with Trainwreck (see, sometimes it happens) where we just talked about what was going on. Nothing dramatic. She even listened to me as I talked about my husband's trip to Sweden. Wow. I got to say something positive without it being shut down. Nice.
Evening rolled around, and I went outside and let everyone out into their pastures, and spent some time in the garden again. Around that time my Sweetie got home, and he came and helped.
I am pretty frustrated with the garden, as I get pretty much every year. We have an enormous amount of weeds because of the horse manure that I use to fertilize. That manure has done a lot for amending our heavy, clay soil, and it is much softer and easier to work with, but there are so many weeds.
I can pull them every day, and the next day I look around and they've all grown back, twice as thick and twice as tall.
They've choked out the beets and the lettuce and the chard. I might be able to replant the lettuce and chard. Too late for the beets, I'll have some but not many.
The peas didn't do much of anything.
The beans look good, the viney stuff like cucumbers and zucchini are doing well, potatoes look good, and carrots are hanging in there. I rarely get much for tomatoes, but stubbornly keep putting in plants.
Then I worked with Wonder and Dandy, and I might have been a little terse with them. Wonder is still very cautious about coming with me, and that gets old after a while. Dandy is very confident about coming with me, but he has the attention span of a gnat, and any time I change my focus to Wonder he's off doing his own thing.
I did get them both to come with me and pay attention at the same time, so that was good.
Then we went inside, and I've been trying to catch up on laundry, as my husband's week of clothes all need washing, and for some reason he can't put any of them through himself.
Normally Monday would be grocery day, but since I went a few days ago, I don't need to go. That said, I hate that my schedule has been derailed a lot lately, because it's structure that keeps things working without chaos. I don't know if we can go all the way to next Monday, or if we'll end up having to do shopping another day.
So, the overall tone for today was frustration at everything that needed doing, frustration at the heat thwarting my life, and the frustration of putting all the work into the garden with so little reward.

Date: 2024-07-24 09:25 pm (UTC)My next door neighbour loves dandelions, clover and plantain. She believes the bees benefit from them. I'd say the roses and flowers I've planted attract an awful lot of bees and I don't need dandelions in the lawn.
I found a tool in the potting shed/garage, a half moon edger. It works much better than the curved shovel I'd been using before. I found it when I was looking for a pitchfork to use as an aerator.
