Aug. 26th, 2024 12:42 amToday I am grateful for:
A tiny bit of rain last night. We could use a lot more, but it took some of the dust out of the air.
A lazy start to the day.
Kitty snuggles.
We took some time to look at the last "planning page" we did together, and I made sure to appreciate the items from it that were accomplished and some that were begun.
We assessed our goals and looked at where we are with a couple of things, and what our next steps will be for the next week or so.
I went to see River and my Sweetie worked on tiling some more.
He was so sure two weeks ago that it could all be done in an afternoon, and here we are after a few afternoons, and today he says that there is some fiddly cutting that needs to be done to get around an outlet and so on, and he hasn't even done any grouting yet, just cutting and laying it out, and I'm not saying anything. This is the reality though, and it's why sometimes he gets so overly confident that so many things around the house are "no big deal, what's the rush, I can do THAT in an afternoon", and it pretty much never takes only an afternoon, which is why I feel it's so important to KEEP TRACK OF TIME, so that weeks don't go by without progress.
He did spend a few hours on it though, so that's something.
River was kinda sleepy today, but he did okay. We worked on our "around" circles, which were tough because he wasn't putting any energy into them, and he kept slowing down and stopping instead of continuing to trot.
Our ridden work was okay.
When R got back from a show, she left the trailer hooked up to the truck so we worked on loading again, this time I put him in, closed the divider, and let him stand quietly for a while with me outside, and he did okay and stood quietly for me to open the divider again (as in did not panic and try to get out right away, but stood nicely and waited to be asked to back out).
I came home and my Sweetie said some friends of ours were coming to pick up some electrical cable we didn't need for a project at their place.
They showed up, and we visited for a while. I haven't seen them for some time, maybe not since last summer.
They brought us some flats of strawberries from a "LOOP" group, meaning they are over ripe and would otherwise be thrown out. A "LOOP" group is a program where stores give that food to people who can feed it to their animals, but I think a lot of it is still used for human consumption.
There was really nothing wrong with most of the strawberries, a few moldy ones but mostly perfectly edible. We would never be able to eat them all before they went bad as we were given several big containers, so we went through and cleaned them and froze them, and at some point we will likely make jam with them.
Then we watched an episode of "Justified".

Date: 2024-08-27 05:26 am (UTC)Doing up jam is pretty common around here, pretty much everyone, even people who live in town, make jam at some point. It's mostly just boiling the jars, and cooking the fruit with sugar and pectin, and pouring it the in the jars hot so it seals when it cools. It's not too difficult.

Date: 2024-08-28 06:48 am (UTC)I'm pretty sure you could make some without sugar, just google it and I'm sure there are lots of options.
You could try "refrigerator jam", meaning you won't have to go through the process of canning and sealing in jars. It will last a few weeks just in the fridge.
I could also likely make jam just by cooking fruit and pectin, and not try to can it and just have a bowl of it in the refrigerator. I can eat fruit in moderation.
