Today I am grateful for:

A cooler day.

Beginning the process of seeing if there's a clear path to help Roxy. For a while it looked like she was doing okay, the leg that had the partly torn ACL looked like it was stabilizing and she was getting around comfortably, if not jumping up and down.

Then, a few weeks ago, when we went kayaking, she looked like the OTHER leg was causing her a lot of pain. I was hoping this would not happen, but it is common for dogs to end up damaging their "good" leg since they end up putting so much weight on it.

We've been talking about the ACL surgery, which is expensive and has a long recovery time, and is no small thing to begin. We've spent so much time being careful now with her legs and carrying her up and down stairs and so on anyhow for the last six months or so, that we're thinking it hardly matters about the long recovery time, since it's going to be almost identical to how we've already been caring for her.

So, I talked with a friend of ours who is a vet, and asked her who SHE would take her dog to, and she gave us a recommendation. This vet might be pretty pricey, but if we're going to go through all of this, I want her to have the best chance of success, because what I DON'T want, is to pay ALMOST as much, and go through all of the same ordeal of recovery, to have it fail (friends of ours paid to have BOTH of their dog's hind legs done, and it didn't work).

So, we have an appointment for a consultation, and we'll go from there.

I had a short conversation with Trainwreck, who is already back to sounding restless and bored and self-absorbed, after being out of the hospital with a new shot at life for less than a week. She was talking about her upcoming move (hopefully) to be closer to her sons, and that will mean being in a small city.

A city with lots of thrift stores. She's a hoarder (she JUST moved a few months ago from her heavily hoarded trailer and a giant mechanic's shop full to the rafters that the new owner spent months emptying by hauling load after load to the dump), and she was all excited about moving to a place with LOTS of thrift stores.

In the small town where she is right now, the thrift store is pretty meh, and only open for two days a week.

When she moves, she will again be in a pretty small suite, and has NO NEED AT ALL for more stuff, but that's never stopped her.

She's never figured out that she needs to do something else with her time besides drive around endlessly collecting things from the dump, or the back alley, or the last day of people's yard sales, or wherever the Hell she finds all of this stuff.

Well, once again I can't control what she does. If she wants to hoard up her living space, that's her choice.

I went to see River, and I was a little surprised at his low energy since it was fairly cool today. We worked on our "around" circle, yields, and getting good draw from the front, and some ridden work where we focused on making nice trot circles around the pylons and general control using the neck rope.

I came home and my Sweetie got home about the same time. He did go for a bike ride today.

We went to the garden and there were LOTS of cucumbers today. Yay! Also more of what looks like a squash/zucchini hybrid (very nice with a thin skin, we ate one for supper).

We watched more "Justified".
