Suinday, September 1
Sep. 2nd, 2024 03:31 amToday I am grateful for:
Well, it was hot today, which is amazing given that we had a bit of a frost a few nights ago. Not enough to harm the garden, but frost nonetheless.
My Sweetie stayed home to work more on the tiling downstairs while I went to see River.
Sister E called as I was going out to catch River, so I sat down and talked with her for over an hour, but it was very pleasant because River's pasture has lots of bush in it, and I watched a huge pileated wood pecker and a pair of blue jays go about their business.
A while ago I mildly left things in her court to call me when she could devote some attention to our conversation, as it didn't seem to work out if I called her. I was always catching her when she was trying to shop, or at the hair dressers, or trying to get somewhere. It's no one's fault, just that it made for some very unsatisfying phone calls. So, I just asked her to please call me when she had the ability to have a conversation when she wasn't busy.
So, though I COULD have said I was at the barn and too busy to talk, I just made time to talk, and it was pleasant, and I wasn't in that much of a hurry anyhow.
Her mother in law passed recently, so they've been busy trying to make arrangements.
River was pretty tired with the heat, and I was respectful of him. We did things like yields and liberty work, but everything was just walking and a bit of trotting, with lots of breaks.
Our ridden work was also low-key, focusing on good shapes on circles and yields.
I came home and my Sweetie had already let everyone out for a while, so I could work with Wonder and Dandy before putting them back in. They did well today.
Saturday:
We didn't do much before going to town.
There was a production of "A Midsummer's Night's Dream" in the lovely old movie theater that is now kind of a community run theater. They have a lot of live music, theater productions, and occasionally still show films. It's a wonderful place, and everything they have there is very good.
This production was also very good, and it was a nice chance for me to wear nice clothes.
It was a lovely evening when it let out, so we went for a bit of a walk.

Date: 2024-09-03 06:53 am (UTC)I wore one of those fun "recycled sari silk" wrap skirts, a white "commes des garcons" kind of shirt, and pretty ballerina flats.
I'm trying to wear my nice clothes and not thinking it's "putting on airs" to look nice for fairly ordinary occasions.
My family pretty much only wore nice clothes like dresses for weddings and Christmas (remember when people dressed up for Christmas things?). Not to just go out for supper or a movie.
I used to feel a bit self conscious about dressing up a bit, but if we go to the city a lot of people dress up just to walk around the "funky district" down town, or even just to go for a walk. Nothing nuts, just a nice skirt and top, fun clothes. Some very creative outfits. Goth stuff, whatever. They just have fun.
Growing up in a prairie town, people just have kind of a uniform of jeans and a t-shirt, and to this day that's what they wear most of the time. Nothing wrong with it, but it's not allowing much room for expression or fun.
People in the town I grew up in WOULD NOTICE if I wore a pretty skirt just to get groceries, or a funky jacket, or a pair of Doc Martins, or cute ballerina flats and palazzo pants. They would sure wonder what was the occasion.
I would feel strange going out for supper at the local "Chicken Chef" diner wearing something cute.
It's kind of a super power to know that in a bigger city you can wear whatever the heck you want, and no one really minds or makes a judgement, for the most part.
Today I saw a REALLY BIG woman who was wearing some kind of lacy, completely see through black body sleeve dress with a corset (I think? Something laced up.). All she was wearing (though mostly hidden by a belly flap) was a pair of thong underwear and part of the dress design covered her nipples (I don't think it was a bra). I wasn't entirely sure that she was even wearing underwear until she turned away and you could make out a tiny triangle above her entirely visible butt cheeks.
NO ONE SEEMED TO CARE AT ALL! NOT ONE PERSON WAS LOOKING AT HER!
So if she can wear that with impunity, I think my outfits are going to be perfectly acceptable, even if they are a bit dressy sometimes (though I think I'm hitting that dressy casual note most of the time).
Wearing "different" clothes takes practice.

Date: 2024-09-05 06:44 am (UTC)Most of the time I'm just aiming for that kind of "cute casual" look (or that sort of low-key dressy), not full out sophistication. Cute casual is still dressing up for me compared to what I usually wear, and you know, that "oh, this old thing" level of cute casual is actually pretty hard to pull off. It requires planning, with the right shoes and accessories.
Whenever I see images of celebrities wearing the perfect oversized sweater and cute jeans with little flats, or that super casual but somehow perfectly put together summer dress look, I know that they still had it put together by a stylist, likely.
