Oct. 27th, 2024 12:10 amToday I am grateful for:
A fun day with my Sweetie. We had a fairly relaxed start to the day, and let the outdoor animals out into their pastures for a while before we left for the city.
We had no firm agenda, just a day outside the normal routine.
First we stopped in at a thrift store that directly supports a women's addiction center, and I like that store because it is a manageable size, very clean, and usually has nice things in it. No crap.
I found a few nice scarves, a book about an Alberta artist, and very interesting little tiny intaglio print (framed and matted very nicely) by an artist named Ronaldo Norden. It is an undersea image with an octopus and some fish and a crab that is so interesting in how fine the detail is. The frame is fairly large, so it almost seems like you've got a nice frame with a nice mat and you barely realize there is a print in the middle.
Then we stopped at a ReStore for only a few minutes as it was closing. My Sweetie was looking for a handle, and found it. I found some DVDs.
Then we went to the old downtown area, and I wanted to look at some of the cool clothing stores that we never seem to go to, I always walk past them as they are usually closed by the time we get to that part of town, because we usually do that last to eat there.
I was finally able to go into the "cool retro" store, and they had a lot of those kind of rockabilly dresses, and I got one in black with a cherry print. Very cute! It's very nicely made out of a heavy 97% cotton, 3% lycra material. It should work fine as an autumn dress if I wear tights and either a sweater or a jean jacket.
Then we went to pick up a single old book from a marketplace seller for very cheap. This very old book is a book we had when we were kids, and read it over and over and over again. It's sort of a children's reader telling the life of early settlers. I still have the original book we used to read, but it is in rough shape with the pages falling out. The copy I got today is in very good shape, though it is likely the same age.
Then we went for a walk on some of the trails in the city that follow the river bank, and then meander through all the bush. We emerged onto a street of very ritzy houses (overlooking the river valley, so yeah), and made our way back to the car.
It's funny to think that we would probably do a lot more walking and biking if we lived in the city, as the city has such amazing trails. I would probably walk almost every day, health willing.
Then we had supper in a nice vegan place we've been before, and there was a bit of drama as a young homeless woman who was a real mess and likely very high was in the restaurant (it's downtown) making a bit of a scene about wanting a piece of cake to go, but not having any money. She was just refusing to leave.
Another patron at the restaurant just sighed and told the serving person to give the homeless woman a piece of cake and put it on her bill. I had sort of wondered if I should do that when she offered, but part of me was holding back, because this felt like that homeless woman had done this before. Just go into some place and start yelling and cause a scene, and people will buy you something just to get you out of there, or the owners will just give you something.
Who knows if she even ate the cake? Maybe it's just a way to get attention, maybe she threw it out. Maybe she traded it for something else.
Otherwise our meal was good.
As we were walking back to our car, the same homeless woman was lying on the pavement in a gas station, literally right in the way of vehicles trying to use the pumps. She was conscious, but just sitting there. She pulled off her shoes and started yelling at people, obviously trying to get attention.
So, we did what she was likely hoping someone would do, we called the city police. She probably does this every time she wants to be taken in for the night. I imagine that most of the time the police will just drop her off at the homeless shelter for the night. So maybe she plans her evening that way, get something to eat, get someone to call the police so she can get inside.
Not the worst plan, I guess.
Then we came home and watched an older movie called "Beautiful Creatures". We'd seen it before at some point, we realized that once we started, but since we didn't remember all of it, it was fine.
