Today I am grateful for:

Nice weather. Sunny and cool, but pleasant enough for late October.

Good sleep and kitty snuggles.

I decided to call Sister S, though she pretty much never calls me. She is the one who retired from her tax preparation business this year, and has a lot of back problems.

She's waiting for surgery for her herniated disk, and though I asked if there is any physiotherapy she could be doing, she says she's not doing anything like that. I wonder if overall, some of her issues might have been improved over the years by building her back muscles a bit. She's always had a desk job and an otherwise pretty sedentary lifestyle, moreso in the winter.

Anyhow, she's really depending on the back surgery fixing things, but I imagine that the recovery from that should still include exercises.

She's almost housebound right now. Her back pain is bad enough that she has a tough time driving, and a lot of day to day things like going to get groceries are difficult for her.

So, from the sounds of it, she's at home doing not much of anything most of the time. That sounds pretty awful. She doesn't have anything in the way of hobbies or interests or even a social circle that might alleviate the boredom.

Her partner is able to help her a lot with things like groceries and so on, but he still works so she's alone in the house all day.

Well, at least I called her and we had a decent conversation.

I was able to spend some time with Wonder and Dandy today in the big horse pasture. I worked with them at liberty, and was able to get them both to come with me at the same time, and I walked with them for quite a while. My Sweetie joined us when he got home, and all of us went for a walk around the pasture. It was pretty fun.

Dandy looks so cute right now, as he has his fluffy winter coat. He gets very dark and kind of dappled in the winter.

My husband took my car to work today, and got the oil changed for me. Good to get that done.

Afterwards I went to see River, and his energy was pretty good today. I got to the barn a little later than usual because I walked for so long with Wonder and Dandy, so I didn't have a ton of time.

I worked with him again on being forward and walking right up beside me instead of lagging behind and getting slow. It's so tough to keep him moving at a steady pace, as he just wants to LAG. He CAN walk nicely and I know his breathing is good, so I'm going to keep at it.

Another rider showed up for her lesson, so I had to leave soon, but she invited me to stay for a while as she warmed up so we could chat. That was nice of her. In that time I rode River, and he did a very nice, steady and forward trot that he maintained for several laps in each direction.

I came home and my Sweetie was on the phone with his adult niece, trying to help her with a computer programming class.

They were on the phone for over an hour last week, and from when I got home, after half an hour I started signalling him to wind it up since we needed to have supper and have our own time to be together.

I only get about two hours with him in the evening, and it's not fair to me if he starts spending an hour of that talking to his niece every time she needs help with her homework. I'm thinking she would be better off finding a tutor in this subject, or a fellow classmate who understands it, rather than my husband who hasn't done any computer programming since HE had a class in university 25 years ago.

We did watch an episode of "Justified". We have one episode left of this series, and the tension is really building. This whole final season has been on FIRE.
