Today I am grateful for:

A skiff of snow last night that mostly is gone today. The air smells nice and clean, and I'm glad it didn't stay too cold.

I spoke with Trainwreck, and had a fairly pleasant conversation, which is great. I hope that means that she's figuring out how to have a life while being sober.

We talked about one of her adult sons who is doing well at his job, and I think she's been spending time with him at his house; he likes to have a fire in the pit in his back yard often.

We talked about there maybe being nice Christmas light displays where she is now, since it is a small city instead of a very tiny rural town, and she was mulling over going to see a play at a local school of "The Jungle Book", even though none of her grand kids are in it. Just a local production that might be fun.

I thought all of that sounded a LOT MORE POSITIVE than what I'm used to hearing from her.

I worked with mostly Wonder today in the big pasture. She was very nervous about whatever was going on with the cows just down the road from us (you can see them easily across the road from the pasture), so she had NO focus.

She left quite a few times, and I worked with her at Liberty until she relaxed and stayed with me. When I finished up with her, she was in a much more relaxed state than when I started, so that's something.

My Sweetie got home, and we talked for a while before I went to the barn.

I needed fuel from the small town first, so I detoured there.

On the dirt road out of town, it was already dark, and a vehicle was crawling along with it's hazard lights on. I just stayed on my side of the road, thinking that the car was either limping along just to get home or something, who knows.

Turns out some guy was WALKING HIS DOGS by having them follow his car. In the DARK. On a fairly busy road (it might be gravel, but it's one of the main roads out of town from the gas station and it goes right to the highway, so it's got a lot of traffic). The dogs were running basically BESIDE his car, you know, on MY side of the road.

I nearly hit one of the dogs, managed to SLAM on the brakes, and rolled down my window to talk to the owner of the dogs. I was like "NO ONE CAN SEE YOUR BLACK AND TAN DOGS IN THE DARK" and he was like "didn't you see my hazards?" and I was like "NO ONE EXPECTS YOU TO BE RUNNING YOUR DOGS AT NIGHT!!!!" .

I really don't want to hit someone's dog. Even if it isn't my fault in any way, and that owner is NUTS for running his dogs beside his car, I really don't want to be the person who hits someone's dog.

As I drove away, there was another car coming towards me, and going a lot faster than me (I often drive pretty slow on gravel because of deer or people's farm cats), and you just know he's going to see that car and just go around it without likely even slowing down. No idea if THEY hit a dog or not.

I just hope that owner was SCARED SHITLESS that I almost hit a dog, and realized what a bad idea that was.

I did make it to the barn, after all of that.

A bareback pad just like the one I already own arrived, I shared the order with R to save shipping costs. R was ordering one from the same company (she and I and a few others all have the same pad) as they were considering discontinuing them due to rising costs. These pads are already considerably more expensive than when I bought the first one almost two years ago.

I have a tough time with how expensive they are, but on some level I get it. Not only are they a technical bareback pad, not just a simple rug strapped onto the horse, but they are made in very small batches, and they likely don't sell many of them.

Most people buying a bareback pad just buy the simple rug or cheap squishy foam pad you strap onto the horse, something just for the sake of protecting your pants. These bareback pads are made with a channel for the horse's spine the way a saddle does, and are made of suede so that they are "sticky".

I don't know how long it will take for the one I currently use with River to be worn right out, but I feel like when it does, I want to go right back to using another pad just like it. I guess if I never use the new one, I can sell it some day.

River did pretty well with everything today. He was in a good mood, had good energy, had eaten, etc. He was slightly distracted by something going on outside, but soon was paying good attention to me.

In general, he just does so much better in the winter than in the summer for energy.

When I was finishing up, R had two new clients in the barn getting the "what Liberty is about" talk.

I came home and made supper, and we watched more "Scooby Doo".
