Sunday, February 9
Feb. 10th, 2025 12:01 amToday I am grateful for:
My Sweetie helping with chores today. It was quite cold, and with a sharp wind.
He was going to stay at home today while I went to see River, but I really wanted him to come today, since he hasn't been there much with me lately.
Sundays can be a bit lonely at the barn, since there's not usually anyone around, and I enjoy having someone there.
He didn't really want to go, because it's so cold, but I'm glad he came.
There was another rider and her Mom there for a few minutes when we arrived, which is a bit surprising since I'm often the only one who keeps coming once it's -20 C.
River was happy to come in and eat his mash and warm up.
He did well today; the cold didn't seem to bother him too much. I did give him lots of time to warm up.
I worked with him with the huge umbrella my Sweetie found at the thrift store, and he seemed okay with it. Not entirely relaxed, but not spooky either. I did work with him a lot with R's smaller umbrella.
I stood up again for a count of thirty, and in the rest of our ridden work focused on rhythm in the trot and canter, and he did well with that.
My poor Sweetie doesn't have the best circulation in his hands and feet, and he got pretty cold.
We came home and put Dandy back with Ursula and the ponies got their blankets again for tonight since it's supposed to be quite cold.
My Sweetie then went to work on the walls in the kitchen, sanding the mudding he'd done. It left quite a mess, and it took nearly as long to clean all the dust off of the floor as it did for him to sand. I swept a tiny bit but it raised too much dust, so I vacuumed. Then I used a wet Swiffer that I went over the floor then rinsed into a pail (not down the sink) about five times to get it all off.
Then he baked his little loaves that he makes for his lunches.
He didn't get to bed in good time, but I don't know why he saves all of this for Sunday night. I TOLD him to try and do some of this when I'm sleeping, as he is often up three or four hours before I get up. Maybe the sanding would have kept me up, but I think he could have done baking in the morning and not woken me up.
Oh well. At least the sanding happened.

Date: 2025-02-10 09:47 pm (UTC)Yes, it's usually a big boost to my mood to get a ride in.
I don't generally ride at -30 C, but I will up to about -25 C, (-13 F).
I dress for the weather, and it's not bad if you keep moving. We are indoors out of the wind, but it's not a heated arena.
The barn where we get ready is heated to about 10 C though, which is enough to stay warm if you need to come inside.
I'm really glad my Sweetie is taking on the sanding, because I absolutely HATE mudding and sanding, and I did a whole bunch of it last year getting the small porch cleaned up.
The clean up is awful on our wood floors because it has texture, and even after several passes it looks cloudy.
We will still need to do more sanding yet, sigh.
BUT, it's progress, and hopefully before too long we can paint the kitchen and have it all looking nice.

Date: 2025-02-11 07:40 am (UTC)Can you imagine? He was going to make that mess without putting a plastic sheet over the doorway between the kitchen and the living room. He would have gotten plaster dust all over the entire living area of our house if I hadn't stopped him.
He also wasn't going to wear a mask until I told him to do it.
He's a nice guy, but what was he thinking?

I once hired a guy to fix cracks in the sulking room walls. He decided to sand the mudded walls without any kind of protective covers anywhere and I caught him five minutes into it. He had no idea why I stopped him, since he did not think he was making any mess whatsoever. When I clapped the top of the bed, clouds of dust puffed from the duvet. I finished the job myself, after a lot of cleaning.

YOU WEAR A MASK, because plaster dust is AWFUL for you.
You close off other doorways because of how badly the dust travels.
He DID have drop sheets over the kitchen island and counter tops, though.
