Feb. 20th, 2025 01:26 amToday I am grateful for:
For being able to do okay in this cold weather by dressing well and to keep moving. My body does a pretty good job of staying warm if I'm careful, and I'm glad. We get enough very cold weather here that if I couldn't deal well enough with it, I would be very house bound.
I did talk with Sister E today, and mostly we talked about being cold. The experience of living in Canada, being outside in cold weather, dressing for cold weather, dogs in cold weather, horses in cold weather, and ice, and so on.
Sister E also enjoys talking about driving in cold weather. Sister E talks a lot about cold weather in all its various iterations.
I did chores (in the cold weather) and then I headed to the barn (in cold weather).
Everyone around here is disappointed that it didn't get warmer today. The forecast said expect -14 C which would have been GREAT, but today was still about -20 C with an AWFUL wind.
Somehow it is supposed to be above 0 C tomorrow. I doubt it. I think we're lagging a day, but even if we get -14 C tomorrow with a lot less wind that will be a big improvement.
River was pretty happy to come in and warm up and get his mash. I got there early enough that he got to eat hay in his stall for about half an hour before our lesson.
I couldn't believe that the people who had their lesson before us A) came at all B) trailered their horse. It was pretty windy, and not great for hauling a trailer.
I actually felt much colder today during our lesson than I did last night when I worked with River, even though last night was supposed to have been just as cold.
I guess because I didn't do as much moving with R as I would on my own? More standing and talking?
We worked on..you guessed it, liberty circles. I need to go back to doing hip yields again. Sigh.
Then we did environment work using the umbrella, getting River to be comfortable with it open on the ground in different parts of the arena, and with R carrying it and moving it around, and so on. We did that for quite a while, giving River lots of time to approach the umbrella when he was ready to do so, and letting him process the experience so that he could build a sense of safety with it.
By then I think I was seriously at risk of frost bite, so I made a point of cutting R off (she was really getting into the work with the umbrella and talking about the nervous system) before I was at the point of no return.
R is right though, we're both kind of "hard core" for being out there doing the work in that weather.
I came home, put Dandy back with Ursula and got into a hot bath as soon as I got into the house. All my bits came back to life, so that's good.
My Sweetie got home right after I did and made supper.
He had one of his molars break on the weekend, and with Monday being a holiday, today was the soonest he could get to a dentist. They fixed it today, and he's got another appointment for some other fillings.
He did go to the climbing gym too.
It was a little late to watch anything, but we chatted and caught up on each other's day while we ate.
