Feb. 22nd, 2025 01:26 amToday I am grateful for:
Getting up for the farrier, and not feeling too disrupted by it.
It's quite wonderful to go outside, and while it is still hovering around 0 C, it's not "cold". The animals are loving it.
Nice to get hooves trimmed without too much drama. Dandy is still prone to a bit of drama, he's still not fantastic with his hind feet. He did calm down today with some patience.
I did speak with Trainwreck today, and she's happiest re-hashing the past. Gossip and stories from a decade or more ago. I guess those are more pleasant, and you can cherry pick through them, and it's all safely in the past.
I spent some time after the farrier left just brushing Wonder (starting to shed, very itchy from wearing her blanket through the cold weather) and letting Roxy wander around.
Then I went to the barn. R was in the barn when I got there, and we talked about some of the things coming up for this summer, one of which is a Liberty event that is somewhat associated with the Youth Equine Liberty Organization that we are affiliated with. The founder, Patrick Sullivan was able to come here last year and do a few days of lessons and so on, with a show. He's not coming this year, so this event is what we are doing instead, I guess.
It sounds exhausting, just like last year. Three whole days from morning till evening of...R doesn't know yet. I am wondering if the "guest speakers" will end up being the same sort of thing I've already attended, the person from Parson's who does myofascia work, more talk about the importance of rescue work, more discussion of the mission behind Liberty work.
I would like to know what the speakers are, and whether or not I will care to see them. Otherwise, it sounds like mostly I would be paying a big sum to have an hour lesson with R during this event, SOMETHING I ALREADY DO EVERY WEEK FOR A LOT LESS MONEY.
Then, there's a show where...we will send a video of our freestyle to Patrick for him to judge. Something that already happens every time I enter a virtual show with YELO, for about ten dollars per class.
R is charging $220 for this event, which, if I don't care about the speakers, isn't going to be worth it for me other than I would be "playing ball" to keep her happy.
We also talked about the rescue group that R works with, and the more I hear about them, the more it just sounds like they are really not well prepared for BEING a rescue, and should maybe consider just helping out an existing facility.
Anyhow. River did well today. I worked on the homework R gave me to improve our circles (by improving his response to the hindquarter yield).
I stood up for a count of thirty and he stayed still after I sat down again.
Then I stayed to work with a mare named Amber during the woman with health challenges' lesson.
Nice not to be on the verge of hypothermia when we're done.
I chatted some more with R as we were cleaning up for the night, mostly about the dog R rescued a while ago, who has terrible skin issues among other things. It's proving to be very difficult to treat, as it is likely autoimmune in origin.
Then I came home, my Sweetie arrived about when I did after his session at the climbing gym.
We ate, and watched "Horns" which was an interesting movie but the end didn't feel very satisfying.
