Aug. 31st, 2025 12:20 amToday I am grateful for:
Sleep, after a restless start.
My Sweetie slinked out of the house bright and early to take back the fence post pounder, and naturally had to go back to help his friends move again, since they NEEDED HIM.
Since he can't possibly ever say enough is enough.
He was home early enough that we could still go do something pleasant.
Our plan was to go to the city, and hit some yard sales on the way that have had signs up the last couple of days.
The first one I didn't buy anything, and there was a lot of stuff that really could be treasure to the right person, but I think they're going to have a tough time finding that person. It looked like "grandpa" died, and left a TON of bicycle parts (not high end, according to my husband, and maybe not useful to most people) and a SHIT TON of electronics stuff related to speakers. To just the right person, that would be a fantastic haul, but to everyone else in the world it's all junk. You kind of felt like Grandpa was either actually good at fixing things, or an eccentric weirdo who just hoarded stuff in the hopes of one day doing something with it.
The next yard sale made me a bit sad, in that it was incredibly bland. Like these people didn't even have personalities. Some old hand tools like hammers and wrenches, some bland books like Danielle Steele and "the life of Willy Nelson", and some household items. It was all incredibly clean and nicely organized, but very bland.
I bought a mop bucket and a Jello mold, because D from pottery wants to "bring back Jello salad" as a bit of a joke, since we always have to take food to pottery gatherings. She wants to see the look on everyone's face when we present them with our quivering towers of delight.
He got a very generous gift card from his family for his birthday for Mountain Equipment Co-op, and we have been talking about replacing our life jackets. We've had those life jackets for probably close to 20 years now, and though they seem fine, they do recommend replacing them after about ten years.
I feel a little weird about that, as they seem to be in good condition, but I get it. The styrofoam does degrade over time.
My Sweetie found a nice shirt on sale, and shorts on sale, both things he wears a lot of. He got two hats too, as his are all looking quite rough.
I found a fanny pack to replace one that is falling apart, and some pants that I probably didn't need but liked.
Good thing we had the generous gift card!
We grabbed some food (burritos), and on our way home stopped at a near suburb of the larger city to go for a walk since it had cooled off a bit.
My Sweetie got some ice cream.
It was a nice walk, though sometimes the parks in towns can feel a little sterile, they're nice places to walk when you're wearing "town" clothes.
Then we came home and watched "Strays", a sort of "low expectations" movie about a dog who had a shitty owner who dumped him, and how the dog found new friends that helped him confront his crappy former owner.
Some people might think there's a big message here, but I imagine it's just easy, low-hanging fruit to make a movie about a cute dog and make us feel all righteous about abusive owners. It was okaaayyy here and there was a good giggle, but a LOT of dumb, tired, repetitive "dick and poop" jokes and cursing.
